Some people buy what they want the moment they want it. Some answer ‘nothing, honestly’ and mean it. For both, the move isn’t guessing harder at objects — it’s changing what kind of thing you give.
What tends to work
The best version of something they already finish — coffee, olive oil, chocolate, tea. Consumables can’t clutter their house, don’t need shelf space, and let you raise the quality of something they already buy without presuming taste.
Something that occupies their favorite hours — a class, a membership, tickets, a reservation. If their shelf is full but their Saturdays are spoken for, give toward the hours instead of the shelf.
The upgrade they tolerate — almost everyone puts up with one bad version of a daily object — the dull knife, the dying headphones, the ancient slippers. Find the tolerated object; replacing it quietly is a bullseye.
The commission — have something made: a framed print of a photo that matters to them, a bound book of a family recipe. You can’t buy the thing they want because it doesn’t exist yet.
What to skip
Asking again — they’ve already answered: nothing. A fourth ‘really, what do you want?’ just moves the work onto them.
A gift card as the whole gift — acceptable attached to something personal; cold on its own — it says ‘I ran out of ideas’ in store credit.
Anything with a setup cost — a hobby kit, a gadget that needs learning, a plant that needs care. Hard-to-buy-for often means doesn’t want more maintenance.
Scale mismatch — a huge gift for a small occasion creates debt. Match the weight of the gift to the weight of the day.
Make it specific
Interrogate their day, not their wants. What’s the first thing they touch in the morning? What do they do every Sunday? Which object do they complain about but keep using anyway? People who ‘want nothing’ still have routines, and every routine has a weak link you can upgrade.
